Pigmentation Treatment

Hyperpigmentation takes many forms, can tend towards the chronic, and calls for genuine partnership from the client. A precise diagnosis is the key to the most effective result.

Pigmentation Treatment

What is pigmentation?

Pigmentation is primarily an aesthetic concern - a collective name for patches of darker pigment that develop over the years due to prolonged sun exposure, hormonal shifts (such as pregnancy or contraceptive pills), and even as a memento of blemishes or injuries. Pigmentation lends the skin an older look, stands out, and is often hard to conceal.

Our skin is home to cells called melanocytes, located between the epidermis and the dermis. Each time we are exposed to the sun, they dispatch a pigment called melanin to the skin's upper layer to form a dark protective shield - in other words, a spot. Melanin belongs to the body's defence system; its primary purpose is to protect the skin.

What causes dark spots?

The obvious suspect is the sun - UVA and UVB rays trigger pigmentation. But the list continues: hormonal imbalance, pregnancies, medication, infections, sensitivity to substances such as fragrances and skincare products, mechanical trauma, skin inflammation, age-related changes - and of course genetics. The client's lifestyle plays a very significant role in achieving results.

Why do spots surface around age 40? When we are young, facial skin is firm, thick and supple; even unevenly distributed melanin sits in deeper layers and is not always visible. Around 40 the skin becomes thinner and loses much of its firmness - and the spots reveal themselves.

Superficial pigment appears darker and more prominent, yet is easier to remove. Paler or muted-tone patches actually indicate pigment in the deeper layers of the skin, and these are more stubborn to treat. The older the spot, the harder it is to remove - but it is almost always possible.

How we treat it

Hyperpigmentation is treated both in the clinic and at home with active ingredients. Importantly, pigmentation treatment is an ongoing process - prescribed at-home actives must become part of the daily skincare routine.

Acid-based treatment encourages skin-cell renewal, removes dead cells and allows accumulated melanin to break down naturally. What matters most is matching each diagnosed client with the precise treatment for them.

In-clinic sessions combine peels, dedicated spot-correcting technology and deep skin hydration.

IPL spot-brightening treatment

IPL is a light beam similar to laser, but with a different wavelength and intensity. The light's energy locks onto the pigment, darkens the melanin and causes the spot to 'float' to the surface, breaking it down. After treatment the spot briefly darkens, then fades within a few days. The method suits sun and age spots. The treatment is entirely painless, with numbing creams available for extra comfort. A treatment series, tailored to your skin, is required for full effectiveness.
